Are We Doing the Right Thing?

by CL5 missMaul

February is the shortest month in the year, so naturally you would think there were less events. Not true; especially not in STAR TREK history. Many things have happened, but what jumped out was the amount of births. An awful lot of STAR TREK characters celebrate their birthday in February. In STAR WARS history they don’t work with month, so I’ll just give you some information about the birth (and early years) of some characters.

In our history we find the birth of Abraham Lincoln on February 12, 1809, and George Washington on February 22, 1732. Both days Are observed as federal public holidays in the United States to celebrate their birthdays. In 1971, Richard Nixon decided that the third Monday of February would be the day that the USA celebrates all its presidents, hence Presidents’ Day.

On February 7, Charles Dickens (1812-1870) celebrated his birthday. The famous English novelist was born in Portmouth and examined social inequalities. This resulted in books like "Oliver Twist," "David Copperfield," and "Nicholas Nickleby." His most famous work was written in just a few weeks: "A Christmas Carol."

Two other important births are on February 11, 1466, Elizabeth of York, Queen of England, and the scientist Galileo Galilei on February 15, 1564.

In STAR TREK history the most famous character who celebrates his birthday in February is Geordi La Forge. He’s the blind Lieutenant who serves on the Enterprise. He’s been blind since birth but sees through a VISOR (Visual Input Sensory Optical Reflector). The character was named after a disabled STAR TREK fan who passed away.

We have a lot of other births, but of a lot less important characters. Nice to know is that in February 2160, the last of the Danon is born on Heartland. On February 7, 2270, Felisa Howard, the future grandmother of Beverly Crusher, is born. Among the rest of the February people are Sam Lavelle, Natasha Yar, Tracy Dane, Arlene Galway, Amanda Stemple and Lao and Qixhu Zhiming.

In the STAR WARS of course we know about Luke and Leia. Both children of Darth Vader, twins but grown up separate. Luke was taken away to the distant planet Tatooine to grow up with his aunt and uncle: Owen and Beru Lars. Leia was adopted into the Royal Family and grew up on Alderaan. She was raised by her mother and Bail Organa, the friend of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Darth Vader, or Anakin Skywalker, grew up as a young slave on the planet Tatooine. He was very skilled in piloting and strong in the Force. He was discovered by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and taken before the Jedi Council to be trained. Chewbecca was born on the planet Kaskyyyk over two centuries before the battle of Yavin. He was a slave of the Empire until an impudent Imperial cadet named Han Solo freed him.

These are the important birthdays we find in February. If your birthday is this month as well check out who shares it with you, and Happy Birthday!
