I get this question a lot in chat and when talking to people
I realize that there is a lot of confusion and questions as to why US fans have
to pay for CBS All Access and the rest of the world get it on Netflix or Cable TV
in Canada. The thing is, Netflix is a
huge producer of very high quality TV shows now! They practically dominate the Emmys nowadays,
they’re everywhere and nominated in every category! With shows like House of Cards, Jessica
Jones, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Orange is the New Black, Netflix is now a
big player in the TV Series picture.
So what happened? Why
do we have to pay? TV Shows like Star
Trek, cost a lot of money! And the catch
is that CBS didn’t pay for Star Trek.
Netflix International paid for the entire production costs of Star Trek
Discovery!! They practically own Star
Trek at this point. CBS only owns it in
name and licence it to other companies like Netflix.

Yeah, but why do Americans have to get CBS All Access when
it’s practically free to the whole world? Well first off, I don’t think Netflix
is new to everyone, so I think we’re taking Netflix for granted at this
point. We take Netflix for granted when
we say to ourselves, well it’s just 9.99$/month, it’s been around forever and
it’s available everywhere. Netflix feels
“Free” in our minds now.
The reason US fans will have to pay is because CBS is
getting Star Trek Discovery for FREE!
And CBS is going to milk it for
as much as they can on their new SVOD service CBS All Access.
In Canada, Star Trek will be on cable TV. Yes, I know.
Everyone is super jealous now!
But it’s on a specialty channel, and unless you’ve subscribed to this
specialty channel, you’re also not getting it for free. Meanwhile the rest of the world keeps trekking
along with their monthly Netflix subscription fee that costs money too!
Bottom line is, are you a fan or not? I really think real die-hard fans won’t care
about the subscription fee and they’re going to get the show anyways. What it really comes down to is, do you like
Star Trek or not? Do you like quality
Sci-Fi on your TV? If the fans enjoy
this show, they will show their support and pay for it, thus paving the way for
more seasons of Discovery. I myself am
paying for it twice, on my cable bill and with my Netflix subscription fee.
With all the news surrounding Star Trek Discovery recently,
this month’s Twitter Status Report has turned into an Editorial! I hope you have enjoyed reading this and I
hope you will tune in for Star Trek Discovery and come discuss the show with us
