Twitter, a Status Report

Article by Dookie

@Outpost10F Twitter, a status report

 As you may know, back in February, I revitalized the Twitter and brought it back to life.  At the time we had something like 50 posts and 60 followers.  8 months in, we now have over 300 followers and almost 1000 tweets!

 Some of you may ask… But what is the OTF Twitter for?  What is Twitter?  Why should I care?

I will try and answer some of those questions here.

First off, what is Twitter?

Wikipedia defines Twitter as “an online social networking service that enables users to send and read short 140-character messages called ‘tweets’”.  In a way it’s a micro-blog.  You link and share articles and thoughts about things you like.  It’s networking, because consequently you follow and have followers that share the same interests as you.  The more you like, follow and retweet, the more you connect with like-minded people who share your interests.

What is your mission goal for the @Outpost10f Twitter account?

The goal is to share news, information and any and all Sci-Fi stuff that is related to our OTF niches.  Those niches being Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings.  As mentioned above, we’re like a micro-blog, so we’re kind of like the Blue Report’s little brother.  However instead of publishing monthly, we are more active on a daily basis, and week to week.

The secondary goal is to increase the Outpost’s social media footprint on the Internet.  We want to be more active, get the Outpost known and active on the Internet.  We are diversifying and reaching into untapped social media resources.  We’re branching out to the world of Sci-Fi on the Internet.  We want to be your go to place for Sci-Fi info, breaking news and geek lore.

But the people who follow us, they aren’t all OTF members are they?

No, obviously they aren’t.  Some of them are, but the vast majority of them aren’t.  And this is normal.  For example, if you follow a Youtuber on Twitter because you like his/her tweets about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, well that doesn’t automatically mean you will subscribe to their channel and religiously watch every single video they release.  I don’t expect people on Twitter to join the Outpost.  It would be exaggerated to believe this.  Most people browse Twitter to catch up on stuff, update their status and see what is going on in the world.

Ultimately, could this bring in new members/chatters for the outpost? Are you actively recruiting through twitter?

Our principal goal is not to recruit new members.  The Twitter account is still too small to start thinking about that sort of thing.  Personally I don’t want to spam recruitment promos, as this will annoy people more than not and they will unfollow us.  In the interim, I think if people like what we post on Twitter, they may yet decide to check out the chatroom and see what it’s about.  But to answer that question, no we are not actively recruiting through twitter.

 What do you have planned for the future of @Outpost10F?

Currently we are working on a new cover photo for our Twitter page.  (See above)  This image encompasses all our niches and what is current and hot on the Sci-Fi scene.

We’re working on regularly posting and scheduling tweets to go off during the week so that we maintain a steady level of activity.

And we will probably be bringing in some new peeps for the Twitter team.  So if you have a crazy love for Twitter and experience tweeting, drop me a line!
