Member Spotlight

Article by McGrath

In this edition of the Member Spotlight we speak with Dookie, a long time Outpost member! Here is what he had to say when he kindly took time out to chat with us.

 ·         Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name at Outpost 10F is Dookie, I also go by the name of Stouph in gaming and on twitter (twitter.com/stouph87).  I am 35 years old, and I have been a member at the outpost since 1999.  I was very active from ’99 to ’07 and I have recently come back earlier this year.  In life, I had gone to school in multimedia to become a web designer.  I then worked in IT for 2 years.  And now I’ve been working in daycare as a since 2009.  I went back to school in 2011 to get my degree in childhood education and graduated in 2014.  So now I work with 0-5 year olds.  I love it!  On May the 4th Be With You, Star Wars Day, I did a special theme day for the 4-year-olds in my class.  We had Jedi training, lightsaber dueling, Star Wars music, Star Wars books and stories!! Already looking forward to next year!

·  What are your hobbies and interests away from OTF?

I love video games!  I mostly play PC Games, like Star Trek Online, World of Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed, Farming Simulator 2015, etc.  Last year I built a pretty badass gaming rig (pic and specs in my doss).  I also play 3DS: Pokémon, Fire Emblem, Bravely Default.

I like reading science-fiction, fiction and fantasy books.  I am currently trying to finish A Song of Ice and Fire.  I love reading Star Trek and Star Wars books.

I love board games, roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons.  And I love to play cribbage!

Outside I love nature, hiking in the woods, going fishing and riding my 29er Mountain Bike on the trails!

 · What is your greatest achievement and how has it shaped you?

My greatest Xbox gamer achievement is finishing Red Dead Redemption at 100%!!  I have the photo to prove it!! ;-)

But seriously, my greatest personal achievement would be to have published a children’s book for 4 to 6-year-olds. The book is in French, and it’s called “Le Trésor de Franco” “Franco’s Treasure”, and it’s the story of this little pirate boy who has no friends and needs help to complete a special quest!  My book is now part of a non-profit project that buys books to give sick kids at the rehabilitation hospital during their long-term stay there.  So to have an impact on kids in this way is pretty amazing and heartwarming.

 ·         What was your dream job growing up?

My dream job when I was growing up was to be a cargo plane pilot.  I never really wanted to be a CF-18 fighter pilot.  I always wanted to fly the big CC-130 Hercules or the CP-140 Aurora.  My parents were in the Air Force and we always lived close to the base.  So growing up we would see these planes all the time!  For me the big cargo planes were the most impressive.

 ·         What is the craziest thing you have ever done?

Probably the craziest thing I’ve ever done was in my college years… A friend and I took my old Nissan Pathfinder 1988 and drove it through a construction site in the mud at night.  We went in there in 4-wheel drive and the mud started flying all over the place!  But then, all of a sudden, the mud went over the hood and over the truck.  We had driven into a big hole.  We looked out the window and there was mud all the way up to the door.  I put her in 4-Low and we pulled out.  I was so afraid we were going to get stuck there!!  But we made it!  After this we drove to show a friend, we knocked at his window to wake him and show him the truck.  He thought we were nuts.  We ended up having to go through the car wash twice to get rid of all the mud!!

 ·         What would be your 'perfect' day?

My perfect day would be like visiting my family out East in Gaspesie and just taking in the nature and the beauty of it all.  Life just slows down out there.   Just being out there, away from the busy hectic city life and just being disconnected from my smart phone and Internet.  Besides my phone doesn’t get a signal out there with my carrier, so that solves that problem!  Going for a walk in the woods, going mountain biking or just hanging out playing cards and having a beer.  That would be perfect.

 ·         If you could have dinner with one person, living or dead, who would it be and why?

I really had to think about this one.  I’d probably say Gene Roddenburry for his pure genius and vision in creating Star Trek.  The idea that his crew was multiethnic and had a strong black female in Uhura was ground breaking for the 60s.  The first interracial kiss on television between Kirk and Uhura also.  And to this day Star Trek is the longest-running franchise still, 2nd only to Doctor Who perhaps.  I’d love to meet Gene just to pick his brain, see what he was like in person.  That would be amazing.

 ·         If you could live in a book, TV show or movie, what would it be and why?

That's easy!  I would totally want to live on the Enterprise D in Star Trek The Next Generation!  My job would probably be as an Operations Officer.  I’m not saying I would want to necessarily be a member of the Enterprise crew, but I would love to live in the 24th century and explore the stars as a StarFleet officer!   I guess that’s why I love playing Star Trek Online.  Me and an old friend I met in OTF (Spef) had always imagined how cool it would be to play a Star Trek multiplayer game and to be in the shoes of those characters we see on TV.  Star Trek online had only been an announced as a possible project back then.  We had no idea the game would be what it is today.

 ·         If you could use technology to do one thing, what would it be?

Is future tech allowed?  I mean if we had transporters right now like in Star Trek we could use them to travel all over the world .  I would totally transport to Australia or Britain and visit some OTFers there!!  And I could visit my folks for dinner and zip back home after.  Probably bring along lots of leftovers too!

But let’s say we had technology to control time, I would love to be able to freeze time and live in that moment.  Maybe this would be a favourite super power if I was a super hero.  So let’s say I’m super tired, I would be able to sleep and never be late for work.  Or maybe just stop time to play a video game or extend my weekend! This would be perfect for moments when you don’t feel like Adulting!  It would be the procrastinator’s dream comes true!

 And finally...

 ·         What are your OTF memorable moments?

I remember being there when the CCC launched and we all converted our OTF factions to Star Wars to fit the new chatroom.  There was a great big ISE invasion early on at launch.  It was so bad we couldn’t help but joke about it and laugh.

Back in the day we didn’t have WoW or Star Trek Online, but I remember we used to play Star Wars Jedi Knight 2 in multiplayer and we used to just hang out in game and talk.  Sometimes we would make teams and have lightsaber dueling death matches.

And lastly, I don’t remember what year this was, but it was New Year’s eve at the outpost and we had a special Trivia Night.  I was hosting the thing and my guest co-host was none other than Andrew Maxwell himself.  And you know how trivia is usually, lots of silliness and craziness ensues…  Well, apparently Andrew was laughing so much that he fell off his chair!  For real!! That was a lot of fun!
