Captain America: Civil War

A few weeks after the dismally executed BATMAN V. SUPERMAN comes the excellent CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. To put it in plain terms: this movie simply rocks! A co-worker of mine considers it possibly the greatest superhero movie ever made, and---as I told him---I think he has a strong case to support his claim.

This movie is the blueprint of a superhero film done right. The powers-that-be at Warner Bros. and DC should examine it closely as they embark on creating their own cinematic universe. Marvel Studios has now been around for several years, and have not yet made a film which qualifies as bad. Ever since IRON MAN (2008), they have been churning out a steady dose of quality movies based on the various Marvel superheros. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR is yet another fantastic entry in their pantheon of films. Continuing the story where CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER left off, CIVIL WAR ups the ante, delivering a whole slew of superheros both familiar and new. A welcome new addition is Spider-Man (Tom Holland), whom most comic book geeks have long wished would appear alongside his Marvel peers. But it’s Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) who actually makes the most dramatic entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, displaying the necessary gravitas and screen presence as he seeks to avenge the murder of his father, the king of Wakanda (don’t bother looking for that country on any map, it’s a fictional place). Plenty of superheros join the fray, battling each other because of their divergence of opinion over whether superheros should be registered or not. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) leads the yes side, and ironically, the patriotic Captain America (Chris Evans) is the one who is against following the will of the United States government.

Plenty of action, drama, comedy, pathos, and adventure are contained in this 2 and-a-half hour movie. The spirit of fun and entertainment never leaves the proceedings for one minute. It may be a long movie but it’s so entertaining that it feels like it’s all over too quickly. There are so many superheros involved that it’s been referred to by many as an “Avengers 2.5”. Personally, I find it better than AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. This is the Avengers sequel we should’ve had instead. Better late than never though. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR is currently playing in cinemas worldwide.
