Gaming Review: Type:Rider

Article by Ice

Richard asked me to do a gaming review and I spent time looking through various free to play games, only to come to the conclusion that there is more to gaming than cost. With that in mind, I stretched my mind back to an email I received from Humble Bundle, if you don't know Humble Bundle provide packs of games, books, music and they do it at a very low cost, usually around $12 to get everything but $1 will get you a few items; the money goes to charity so good cause.

Anyway, back on topic what I remembered was a game that come out a while back that caught my eye, unfortunately I forgot to go back and pick it up at the time, I did some searching and found there is a web-based demo of the first few levels, so I decided it would be ideal for us, we can try before we buy.

The game is called Type:Rider, nothing complex you play as two dots and travel around various environments, simple does it... Oh, I forgot, this is so much more. It's a puzzle game, the environments comprise of puzzles and you solve these problems to continue... I'm missing the point again.

Type:Rider is a look at font's throughout time, these "environments" are basically letters in odd positions to create the environment. It gives you a nice tutorial to explain a little about the controls but your straight into the game and it's been very creative in its development, your level selection screen is basically a mini-game, you roll your dot's to where you want to play and let it float you into the level.

Whether you're into all the art side of things is irrelevant, the demo alone is enough to kill some type and makes a great replacement for solitaire if you're sitting at work or just looking to kill a bit of time between tasks. The challenges get progressively harder as you go through and if you finish the demo, just go back and play them again, try to reach the hard to get areas in the levels or just marvel at how awesome it is that it's made purely out of letters.  Each level is a different font and with it comes a new style of play.

I highly recommend checking out the demo (http://typerider.arte.tv/#/jouer) or splash out a few dollars, pounds, euro's whatever your currency over on steam. It's a fun game and unique style is definitely worth checking out even if you're not a fan of games. If you are an arts person, it is a must, if you're not it's an improvement on your billionth game of solitaire.

Check out fonts in a new light, learn a little about the past and which font's symbolize which era, and have fun!
