This month's theme for the Tribune is films and movies, and while watching the news I finally got some of that oddly-achieved inspiration. Amazing what the news can do for you... eh?

Lately the world has witnessed a great number of "Blockbuster" movies, quite possibly the greatest number in movie history. Action and drama films are lighting up the theatres one by one, and advertising costs are at an all-time high. From the leaping antics of Spiderman (by the way, there is a sequel coming out), the terror of the machines in Terminator 3, all the way to the combination of beauty, brains and brawns of Charlie's Angels, we've been rather bombarded by action and adventure on the big screen. But why is this? Why all the movies, all the entertainment, all at once?

Going with the grain, one of the reasons is with world events. With all the problems within the world today, many people enjoy the fact that you can, for only $US5.00 (matinee prices before 5pm), send all your worries and cares to the bottom of a 32oz drink and large popcorn with extra butter. Personally, I rather enjoyed doing that while watching Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde 2 *insert-innocent-look-here*

Going against the grain, I'd have to say that one of the reasons is because that is what we (at least Americans... unfortunately, I'm not that well-versed with other countries' cultures =}) have asked for. The interesting thing is, however, that the Rise of the Blockbusters has brought about the Fall of the Movie-lovers. These so-called Blockbusters have ended up causing the "bust" of directors in movies that are nothing but sequels (part 2 and part 3).

Interestingly enough, even the political realm has managed to grasp at least a small bit of the interesting movie era, including the US Ambassador to Iraq and his direct quote from Spiderman which included "with great power comes great responsibility" on Meet The Press (20 July 2003). I'm personally wondering what'll come next... how about the President of the United States saying to the Iraqi people after all this is over, "I'll be back".

In any case, movies are the embodiement of all that we are. They show us human nature, with all its successes and failures, pros and cons, triumphs and faults. They also show us what we want to see, and also some of what we might otherwise not have intented to, or thought about for that matter. Regardless of what may happen in the future, movies and films will always be there, in some form or another. With the release of DVDs as widespread, if not more, than toaster ovens and kitchen sinks, they have become a timeless classic that allow us to be entertained again and again.

So my suggestion to you is to head over to the nearest movie rental and check out a few good movies. You'll be entertained, scared, informed, and every other emotion known to man. Besides, what better way to spend a rainy day than with a great movie, bag of buttered popcorn, and a comfortable couch to sit on.
