September 11th

It's been a year since the awful events of September the 11th, 2001. When we woke up on that morning and got out of our beds, we didn't know that by the time the sun went down, our world would be changed forever. So much has happened in the aftermath and at times, the planet seems engulfed in a tidal wave of hate. Perhaps,then, this is a time for us to reflect on what he have learned and what we can do to bring about a better future.

There are three big lessons.

Firstly, everybody has the right to live and go about their business, according to their values/beliefs, in safety.

Secondly, as a species, and yes, as individuals, we need to resolve our differences peacefully.

Thirdly, moderation and open mindedness, not fanaticism, is the way to understanding. Terrorism can't be justified. Fanaticsm, coupled with a disregard for the first and second points, led to September 11th.

We have to trust that our leaders will draw us closer. . . we're all people in the end. One species, with many cultures and beliefs. The people who perpetrated the terrorist attack on September 11th wished to set man against man, and perhaps the best way to remember the victims is to make sure that doesn't happen.

I'd like to conclude with two poems: the first is about the First World War, but it seemed appropriate. The second is a call for peace.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
between the crosses,
row on row that mark our place;
and in the sky the larks,
still bravely singing,
fly scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead.Short days ago we lived,
felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved,
And now we lie in Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw the torch;
Be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die we shall not sleep,
Though poppies grow in Flanders fields.
John McCrae (1872-1918)

PEACE

PEACE will come when people live
In friendship, side by side,
And cherish understanding
More than hatred, greed and pride.

PEACE will come when people see
All people as the same,
And no one has to live in fear,
In ignorance, or shame.

PEACE will come when people
Who are needy can reach out
For shelter, food, or love,
And no one has to do without.

PEACE will come when people
Learn to listen and to care
About the rights and dignity
Of people everywhere.

PEACE will come when love and trust
And kindness know rebirth,
And on that day all people
Will rejoice in peace on earth.
