OK, as I am sure all our gentle readers who gave my comments of October a look, you will remember that I was in a bit of a tizzy about the newest offerings in the world of Star Wars Books.
Not only was I anxiously awaiting the arrival of Destiny's Way, the next novel in the New Jedi Order series, but I was also pondering (that is a BossDragon word) the purchase of the 2 new Star Wars e-books that our partners in literacy, amazon.com were offering.
First off, I will admit that I did go to the bookstore and buy the new book as soon as I could, and that I did spend an entire evening/night/middle of the night reading it till I finished it. And it was pretty darn good. It will be reviewed in the Library shortly - lets get this issue of the Tribune up first.
Then, I bit the bullet and jumped right in and gave amazon a chance to take more of my $$. I ordered the e-books Ylesia and Recovery. First off, I had to download a special Acrobat reader e-book thing which is not the same as our regular Acrobat reader that we can read documents with. That took just over an hour because I loaded it to my laptop and I am stuck out here in the woods with a really slow dial-up and no chance in heck for broadband or cable modem for probably 5 years. Once that was accomplished (really rather easy for the technically challenged) I got a very pleasant email from amazon telling me to download my 2 new books.
Didn't take but just a few minutes and I had 2 brand new books for less than $7.00 American. I can live with that. It took some time getting used to this cause you can't really hold the book in your hand, you balance the laptop on your lap (I like to read in bed) and click on a little page to turn pages backwards and forward. Other than that, it was a pretty darn slick set up. It did take me a few minutes to figure out the navigation, like how to get back to the page where I stopped if I had to turn off the comp, but otherwise, not as bad as I expected.
And the 2 stories, though short, were pretty darn good. In fact, I will review them for the Expanded Section of Star Wars because they do answer some questions, and fill in some blamks that add to the New Jedi Order storyline. And Recovery is about Han and Leia, 2 of my favorite characters.
So, the old Library Dog has learned a new trick. I don't think that e-books will ever replace a real book in my personal library, but it is nice to know that I can enjoy these little ones in between, stash them on the laptop and read and re-read them while I am on the road. The only thing I can't do is print the darn things!
Just as an FYI, there are some new books in the Good Books, Fantasy and Sci Fi sections, and very soon, new additions to Star Wars Expanded and all four Star Trek eras. Please visit the Outpost Library, see what we have been reading, and keep those submissions coming in! Thank you Library Staff for keeping me busy and not bored :)!
