Greetings!
A while ago, it was decided that our Public Updates Board was getting rather cramped. Lots of people use it, and messages often fly by so quickly that important announcements may not have a chance to be seen for very long. The solution? Get rid of the Public Updates Board and replace it with a new web forums system!
For several months now, I have been coordinating the development of the soon to be released Outpost 10F Forums. Admiral Maxwell and myself have managed to come up with a system which will allow us to use our existing personnel database with a piece of third party software. What this means is that you'll be able to use your familiar OTF username/command code in a powerful web forums environment.
In case you've never used web forums, here's a bit of background. Web forums allow a high level of topic categorization and organization. On a VERY simplistic level, each individual "forum" is like a public updates board of its own. Within a forum, users create topics, and other users can reply to those topics. All the while, the replies to each topic will remain in their individual "threads", keeping the forums neatly organized.
Many web sites have forums nowadays, and its high time Outpost 10F got some forums of our own! Here are some of the features included in our forums: All the features you've come to expect from our public boards, such as the ability to post basic HTML and images.
- The ability for moderators to create polls. The standard set of Outpost 10F smileys are built in. A powerful searching tool, which includes a quicksearch for the newest posts. Ease of configuration, meaning that forums can be created on the fly for special discussions and events. A link to the Outpost 10F database. Meaning that one's OTF information (e-mail, ICQ/MSN/AOL numbers, OTF Dossier, and Homepage) is completely synced with that of the Forums. A sleek, Outpost 10F-style interface.
We're very excited about the OTF Forums. They should be released within the next few weeks. At which point, they'll be available for use by all registered Outpost 10F members. Stay tuned!
