Did you know...

...that the piggy bank came to be due to a misunderstanding in the 1800's? During this time an orange type of clay called "pygg" was often used to make plates, jars etc. When the English started putting their money in the jars made out of this clay the word "pyggbank" was coined. A potter misunderstood when one of his customers asked for a pyggbank, so he made a bank made to look like a pig. Even though the customers didn't quite get what they asked for they liked the end result. The rumour spread, as did the pig banks.

Some however claim that it came about from an old tradition in Holland where the kids would get something called "feast pigs", which they got to open every Christmas.

Storing your money in moneyboxes is however an ancient tradition, moneyboxes in different shapes have been found in different places. Moneyboxes shaped as Greek tax houses have been found and dated to 220 BC
