DragonCon 2015

Article by Demon Slayer

Dragoncon is a five day event set over USA Labor Day weekend in Five Major Hotels.

3rd Arrived in Atlanta, dropped everything off at my hotel two and half miles away from Dragoncon (was last minute, so best I could do), and picked up my badge and program. Was warned by badge vendor that I most likely would have problems with internet and cell service due to the number of people (this I know from many large events I have attended, but first event to be told this)

4th Day one of Dragoncon. For a photographer of Cosplayers, I was in my element. I took over a thousand pictures (about 500 after deleting duplicates and rubbish). I bumped into Youtube friends Sara Parker &, Jurre Van Herwijnen (NerdishByNature),

Only place I could access web was in my hotel. Only way I was able to converse with people was via text. But due to the amount of people on network, the only time I received text was outside the event hotels, and not always in the order they was sent.

5th Day Two. Found a spot for the Dragoncon Parade, made new friends and met with old friends (OTF Tommy) who I had not seen for 16 years (OTF Las Vegas Union 1999). I took about 400 pictures throughout the day (Parade, Cosplayer Photoshoots). Sadly I forgot to take a photo of Tommy. L

6th Day Three. Met up With Tommy again, and went to see "John Noble" (Fringe/LOTR/Sleepy Hollow/Elementry) panel. Was supposed to see John Barrowman (Dr Who/Arrow), but the line was so long we knew we wouldn’t get in. Got an up to date picture of James (Aka OTF Tommy).

We parted ways as I went to take pictures of more cosplayers, and to get a professional photo with Stephen Amell, and John Barrowman (this took longer than normal due to last minute we was given a choice or normal John Barrowman, or John Barrowman in a TARDIS Dress (couldn’t resist it, and had to get John in a dress *LOL*). Due to the reshuffle due to John Barrowman last minute option, I ended up missing one of the BIG cosplay photoshoots (Marvel Cosplayers)L. The day ended with me watching the Masquerade ball, which my friend Jake Broster and David Collier was in (they won their category with a Gotham skit).

7th Day Four. The quietest day of the event. Most of the attendees were going home (even some of the booths was closing up). Didn’t get many photos as most was leaving. Found out it’s a small world we occupy. Was taking to a random attendee re Dragoncon. Got on subject of Captain America cosplayers to find we have a mutual friend (Ryan Jenkyns).

Overall: Best convention for a cosplayer photographer. Wished I had attended more of the panels, but was totally distracted by the sheer amount of costumers. Also I never got round to see what the vendors was selling. Next time I attend I will try to be in one of the five hotels as my feet was killing me, and the two and half mile walk back to mine didn’t do my feet well (So I didn’t attend any of the night parties, or stay up till 5am). The event needs a foot masseur service :P

Downside: The lighting wasn’t the best, so a lot of my pictures are going to have to have major work to be seen. Also due to small screen I found quiet a lot came out fuzzy
