There was lots of interesting news posted on the Blue Report Facebook page in the last month, from many of your favorite scifi universes...
June was kicked off by news of a crowd-funded documentary on
the iconic character of Spock, directed by Adam Nimoy, son of the late, great
Leonard Nimoy. There would be more news of honors for Leonard Nimoy, this time
in the form of having a comet named after him. Star Wars went where that series
had never gone before, introducing an apparently new and canon character in the
comic – the character of Han Solo’s wife – and no, it’s not Leia. June 4th,
there would be news that Nichelle Nichols had suffered a minor stroke, but
she’s apparently well on her way to recovery, sticking to plans to appear at a
convention just weeks later.
June 10th brought news of a 30th
anniversary screening of Back To The Future in Los Angeles. That was followed
by a first look at the upcoming miniseries revival of The X-Files, brought to
us by Entertainment Weekly. Jared Padalecki was interviewed by US Magazine, and
explained why he cancelled some convention appearances. He “needed a break from
everything” because he was suffering from exhaustion. June 11th
brought sad news from the Star Wars universe, as we learned that Christopher
Lee had passed at the age of 93. More sad news, this time the death of Star
Trek II composer James Horner, from a plane accident at the age of 61.
The Marvel universe came alive with news that a new
Spider-Man had been cast. The web-slinger will apparently appear in Captain
America: Civil War, before getting his own movie, directed by Jon Watts. More
news from Marvel, as it was announced that the Secret Warriors storyline would
become a driving force in the “Agents Of SHIELD” TV series.
From the Whoniverse, Big Finish announced a new line of
Doctor Who audio plays – a new line of classic Doctors and their first
encounters with New Who villains, as well as two appearances of Alex Kingston’s
River Song opposite Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor. An article followed that,
fleshing out the details, and speculating on what fans might have to look
forward to.
Next up, there was news that Ron Perlman was either rallying
the troops on Twitter, or inadvertently gave away that the Hellboy series would
be getting a third installment. It was reported that Stan Lee was hospitalized
the morning before the “Ant-Man” premiere, but he made it to the show because
he wanted to see his cameo in the film. And lastly, news from MGM that they are
in development of a new sci-fi TV network, which would include programming like
reruns of Stargate and The Outer Limits.
